Perimeter of a Figure

Concept Explanation

Perimeter of Figure

Perimeter is a one-dimensional measurement that represents the distance around a closed geometric figure or shape. To find the perimeter, add the lengths of each side of the shape. If there are units, include units in your final answer.

To compute perimeter, the shapes must be closed. In the given figures, we can find the perimeter by adding all the sides in figure 1 because it is a closed figure, but in figure 2, we cannot find the perimeter as it is an open figure.

Perimeter: Perimeter is the total length of the boundary of a closed figure.

The perimeter of a simple closed figure is the sum of the measures of line segments that have surrounded the figure.

Illustration: Find the perimeter of triangle ABC, when AB = 10cm, BC = 7cm and AC = 15cm

Solution: Perimeter of ∆ABC = length (AB + BC + CA = 10 + 7 + 15 = 32 cm

Illustration: Find the perimeter of Quadrilateral DEKN, when DE = 12cm, EK = 7cm, KN = 4cm and ND = 14cm.

Solution: Perimeter of the quadrilateral DEKN = length (DE + EK + KN + ND) = (12 + 7 + 4 +14) = 37cm.

Illustration: Find the perimeter of a regular hexagon of the side 10cm.

Solution: Perimeter of the hexagon PQRSTU = length (PQ + QR + RS + ST + TU + UP) = 6 x 10cm = 60cm
